Fathers and sons can have complicated relationships. Aaron and I have weathered circumstances that most dads and their sons face; I was young and overbearing when he lived under my roof, and he was exceedingly privileged. Now, I’m much older, maybe a little wiser, and Aaron has married very well and given me a beautiful granddaughter. It’s amazing what grandchildren can do in terms of evening out adult relationships.
I have opened a chapter of my life where I write about the importance of legacies, how they are formed, why they are important, and what the key elements of meaningful legacies might be. Part of my legacy, I think, is a willingness to live a fairly transparent life, so now you can hear about my legacy straight from the horses mouth, as it were. Aaron is a splendid father in his own right, and this conversation underscores things we both hold dear, what he learned from me, and just as importantly, what he may have learned NOT to do.
