As we become what we are, we can have this vision of how we build everything from scratch, from the ground up. We want to buy into the myth of being “self-made,” not paying any attention to the parts of our life that were already present. In many cases, our past selves, those collections of habits and relationships and things, get in the way of what we want to become. What we are needs to burn down to make room for what we will be.
And we hate that process. It is painful, uncomfortable, and inconvenient. Yet, at the same time, it is cleansing, focusing, and, ultimately, strengthening. We need to foster our vision of what we can be in order to be willing to let go of what we have been.
Take courage. Know that better things, greater faith, and a more positive future await you if you are willing to put a match to the convenient, easy, and comfortable.
